Our customers often ask us questions about our Hammerite metal paint collection. Below are a few FAQs to give you a bit more information about this popular product range.

Frequently Asked Questions

What colours are available in Hammerite Direct to Rust Paint?

Hammerite Direct to Rust Metal Paint is available in a wide selection of colours and finishes, including Smooth, Hammered and Satin. Popular colours include black, white, silver, blue, red, gold, copper and green, with additional shades available depending on the finish and product.

Do you need to use a primer before applying Hammerite Metal Paint?

Whether you need a primer depends on the type of metal and Hammerite product you are using.

Hammerite Direct to Rust Metal Paint is formulated as a primer, undercoat and topcoat in one, so it can be applied directly to suitable bare or rusty ferrous metal without a separate primer or undercoat.

However, when applying Direct to Rust Metal Paint to non-ferrous metals such as aluminium, zinc or galvanised metal, Hammerite Special Metal Primer should be used first to promote adhesion and provide a suitable surface for the topcoat

Can I paint directly over rust using Hammerite Metal Paint?

Yes. Hammerite Direct to Rust Metal Paint is specifically designed to be applied directly over suitable rusty and bare ferrous metal without the need for a separate primer.

Before painting, remove any loose or flaking rust using a wire brush or coarse sandpaper and ensure the surface is clean, dry and free from grease or other contaminants. For heavily rusted areas, additional rust treatment or preparation may be required before painting.

How many coats of Hammerite Paint do I need to apply?

The number of coats required depends on the Hammerite product and the condition of the surface.

For Hammerite Direct to Rust Metal Paint applied by brush or roller, two coats are generally recommended on bare or rusty metal. On previously painted metal that is sound and properly prepared, one coat may be sufficient.

For Hammerite Direct to Rust aerosols, three light coats are recommended. Aerosols can be recoated after approximately 15 minutes when applying wet-on-wet coats, whereas the brush-applied products generally require around 4 hours before recoating. Always check the instructions for your specific Hammerite product before application.

What is the difference between Hammerite Smooth, Hammered and Satin?

The main difference is the appearance and texture of the finished surface:

  • Smooth: Creates a smooth, even finish for a clean and contemporary appearance.
  • Hammered: Produces a distinctive textured, hammered effect that can help disguise minor surface imperfections.
  • Satin: Provides a more subtle sheen than a gloss finish, giving metalwork a smooth and understated appearance.

All three finishes are available within the Hammerite Direct to Rust range, although colour availability varies between finishes.

Can I apply Hammerite over previously painted metal?

Yes, Hammerite can be applied over previously painted metal provided the existing coating is sound and properly prepared.

Remove any loose, flaking or peeling paint and lightly abrade the existing surface to provide a suitable key. Clean the surface thoroughly and allow it to dry before applying Hammerite.

For Hammerite Direct to Rust Metal Paint, Hammerite states that one coat may be sufficient over previously painted metal in sound condition, whereas bare or rusty metal generally requires two coats.

Which Hammerite paint should I use on radiators?

For painting water-filled household radiators and hot water pipes, use Hammerite Radiator Enamel rather than standard Direct to Rust Metal Paint.

Hammerite Radiator Paint is specifically formulated to provide a durable, heat-resistant finish on household radiators and hot water pipes. It is available in different finishes, including satin and gloss, with aerosol options also available
