Which Filler Do You Actually Need? A Simple Guide For Walls, Wood, Masonry & More

Filler isn't the most exciting part of decorating, but using the right one can make a huge difference to the final finish.

The problem is that not all fillers are designed for the same job.

The filler you'd use to repair a crack in a plaster wall isn't necessarily the one you'd want on a skirting board, a timber window frame, or an exterior wall. Get it right and your repair will disappear once painted. Get it wrong and you could end up dealing with cracks, shrinkage, or repairs that show through later on.

To make things a little easier, I've put together a simple guide to the most common decorating repairs and the fillers I'd recommend for each one.

Filling Holes & Cracks In Interior Walls

This is probably the repair most people tackle regularly.

Whether you're filling old picture hook holes, repairing damaged plaster, or sorting out cracks before decorating, you'll usually want either a powder filler or a ready mixed wall filler.

For larger repairs, I tend to favour powder fillers because they're strong, versatile, and can cope with deeper filling.

Toupret Patch & Repair Filler

If you're dealing with anything from everyday wall damage to deeper holes, Toupret Patch & Repair Filler is a brilliant all-rounder.

One of the reasons decorators like it so much is that there's no real fill depth limit, so you're not constantly building up multiple thin layers for deeper repairs.

It's also ready to paint in around three hours and sands back beautifully, which makes preparation much easier.

What I particularly like about it is how versatile it is. It works on everything from plaster and plasterboard to concrete, cement, previously painted surfaces and even primed wood, making it one of those products that's handy to keep around for all sorts of decorating jobs.

Another Great Option: Toupret Interior Filler

For more general filling work indoors, Toupret Interior Filler is another product I regularly recommend.

It's designed for smaller holes, cracks and surface damage and is easy to mix, apply and sand.

If you're simply preparing walls before painting, this is often all you'll need. And if you'd rather skip the mixing altogether, it's also available in a ready mixed version, making decorating prep even quicker and easier.

What About Small Surface Imperfections?

Sometimes the wall doesn't actually need repairing.

It just needs refining.

Maybe you've got a few tiny dents, hairline cracks or minor imperfections that become obvious once the sunlight hits the wall.

This is where a fine surface filler comes into its own.

Toupret Fine Surface Filler

Toupret Fine Surface Filler is the sort of product I reach for when I want a wall to look properly finished rather than just repaired.

It's designed specifically for fine cracks and surface imperfections and creates an incredibly smooth finish before painting.

One thing I particularly like is that it doesn't require spot priming, which helps speed up preparation.

Whether you're working on plaster, plasterboard, concrete, cement or previously painted surfaces, it's a great choice when you're aiming for a really professional-looking finish.

Filling Gaps Around Skirting Boards, Architraves & Frames

This is one area where people often reach for the wrong product.

If you've got a gap between a wall and a skirting board, a rigid filler isn't usually the answer.

The reason is movement.

Even inside our homes, materials expand and contract slightly over time. That's why a crack that looked perfectly filled six months ago can suddenly reappear.

In situations like this, caulk is usually the better choice.

Unlike traditional fillers, caulk remains slightly flexible after it cures, helping it cope with small amounts of movement.

HB42 Decorators Caulk

If you're sealing around skirting boards, door frames, window frames, coving, or trim, HB42 Decorators Caulk is a really solid option.

It's flexible, paintable, and suitable for both interior and exterior use.

It can usually be painted over after around an hour, which is handy if you're trying to keep a project moving.

It's also mould resistant, making it useful in areas where moisture might occasionally be an issue.

Some other decorator's caulk worth mentioning are: Paint Warrior Flexible Decorators Caulk and FC1 Ultimate All-In-One Filler & Caulk.

What If The Crack Keeps Coming Back?

If you've repaired the same crack more than once, there's a good chance movement is the problem.

This is where a flexible filler can be incredibly useful.

Toupret Fibacryl Exterior Flexible Filler (Fill-Flex)

Filll-Flex is designed specifically for repairs where a standard filler might eventually fail.

It remains flexible once cured, helping it move with the substrate rather than cracking again.

I often recommend it for skirting boards, architraves, window frames, masonry, plaster, and previously painted surfaces where movement could be causing the issue.

It's suitable for both interior and exterior use and can be sanded and painted once fully dry.

For recurring cracks, it's often the product that solves the problem properly.

Repairing Damaged Woodwork

This is another question we get asked all the time.

Whether it's a dent in a door, an old screw hole in a window frame, or a chunk missing from a skirting board, timber repairs need a slightly different approach to walls.

The reason is simple: wood moves.

It expands and contracts with changes in temperature and moisture, which means you need a filler that's designed to bond properly to timber and won't crumble when you sand it.

Toupret Wood Filler

Toupret Wood Filler is one of those products I find myself recommending regularly because it's incredibly versatile.

It's suitable for both interior and exterior wood, can be sanded, stained, painted or varnished, and can even be drilled or screwed into once dry.

From repairing skirting boards and window frames to filling nail holes, dents and chips, it's a really reliable option for general timber repairs before painting.

For Smaller Repairs: HB42 Whole Job Ready Mixed Wood Filler

If you want something ready to go straight out of the tub, HB42 Whole Job Wood Filler is another handy option.

It's touch dry in around 15 minutes, available in several wood shades, and works well for smaller repairs where speed and convenience matter.

And because it's already mixed, there's no prep required. Just open the tub and get started.

Toupret Fine Finish Wood Filler

If you're aiming for a particularly neat finish before painting, staining, or varnishing, Toupret Fine Finish Wood Filler is well worth a look.

It's designed for finer finishing work and is ideal when you want repairs to blend in as seamlessly as possible with the surrounding timber.

It can be painted, stained, or varnished after around an hour, making it a great option when you're trying to keep a project moving.

Repairing Exterior Walls, Brick & Masonry

This is where using the wrong filler can really catch people out.

A filler that works perfectly indoors won't necessarily survive outdoors.

Exterior surfaces have to deal with rain, frost, changing temperatures and everything else the British weather decides to throw at them, so they need something much tougher than a standard interior filler.

Toupret Touprelith Masonry Repair Filler

For cracks, holes and damaged areas in masonry, Touprelith is one of my go-to recommendations.

It's designed specifically for exterior use and works brilliantly on brick, concrete, stone, cement and concrete blocks.

Once dry, it can be painted over with masonry paint and provides a durable repair that stands up well to outdoor conditions.

It's particularly useful for repairing damaged render, broken corners and cracks that need something a little tougher than a standard wall filler.

For More Demanding Repairs: Toupret MUR EX Rock Solid Exterior Repair Filler

If you're dealing with more challenging exterior repairs, Rock Solid Repair Filler is another brilliant option.

It offers excellent adhesion and works across a huge range of exterior surfaces, making it particularly useful when you're dealing with older masonry or previously painted substrates.

It's suitable for cement, concrete, brick, stone, breeze blocks and previously painted masonry, creating a strong, durable repair ready for overcoating.

The Right Filler Makes All The Difference

Taking the time to repair surfaces properly and choosing a filler that's designed for the job will help you achieve a smoother finish, longer-lasting results, and far fewer headaches down the line.

Whether you're dealing with walls, woodwork, masonry, skirting boards, or exterior repairs, matching the filler to the surface is one of the simplest ways to improve the final result.

The biggest mistake I see people make is assuming one filler can do every job. In reality, spending a couple of minutes choosing the right product usually means less sanding, fewer repairs, and a much better finish in the long run.
