The Best Exterior Metal Paints (And Why I Recommend Them)

Exterior metalwork takes a lot of punishment from the weather. Between rain, frost, UV exposure, and general wear and tear, it’s no surprise that gates, railings, and garden furniture eventually start looking tired.

The good news is that the right metal paint can completely transform exterior surfaces while also protecting them long-term.

Whether you’re repainting rusty railings, refreshing old garden furniture, or updating exterior metalwork to better suit your outdoor space, choosing the right product makes all the difference.

Here are some of the exterior metal paints I recommend most often, along with a few simple prep tips to help you get the best finish possible.

What Makes a Good Exterior Metal Paint?

Exterior metal surfaces need more from a paint than standard interior products.

A good exterior metal paint should:

  • Adhere properly to the surface
  • Resist peeling and flaking
  • Protect against rust and corrosion
  • Stand up to changing weather conditions
  • Be durable enough for everyday wear and tear

Some products are designed specifically for rusty metal, while others are better if you want colour matching, a softer designer-style finish, or something suitable across multiple surfaces.

The best choice usually depends on what you’re painting and how exposed it is to the elements.

My Recommended Paints for Exterior Metal

Zinsser AllCoat

If you’ve ever asked us which exterior metal paint we’d choose ourselves, there’s a very good chance we’ve said Zinsser AllCoat.

It’s one of those products that just makes decorating easier. It adheres brilliantly to metal, works on a huge range of exterior surfaces, and in many cases you won’t even need a separate primer, which is a huge bonus if you want to save time on prep.

Available in matt, satin, and gloss finishes, it can also be colour matched into thousands of shades, including popular designer colours. That makes it ideal if you’re trying to coordinate gates, railings, planters, or other exterior metalwork with the rest of your outdoor space.

Another reason we keep coming back to it is how easy it is to use. It dries quickly, levels beautifully, and gives a smooth professional-looking finish without feeling difficult to apply.

Rust-Oleum CombiColor

If the metal you’re painting is already showing signs of rust, Rust-Oleum CombiColor is one of the best options out there.

Once you’ve removed any loose or flaky rust, this can go directly onto the surface, which saves a huge amount of prep time compared to more traditional systems.

Because it acts as both a primer and topcoat, it’s especially useful for older exterior metalwork that’s seen better days, whether that’s gates, railings, fences, or tired garden furniture.

Once cured, it’s incredibly durable and holds up really well against harsh weather conditions, making it a really reliable option for long-term exterior protection.

Caparol Amphibolin

If you’re tackling a larger exterior project and want one paint that works across multiple surfaces, Caparol Amphibolin is definitely worth looking at.

One of its biggest advantages is its versatility. It works across exterior metal, masonry, cladding, woodwork, and trim, which makes it incredibly useful when you’re trying to tie different surfaces together with one colour scheme.

Because it acts as both a primer and finish in many situations, it can also save a huge amount of time during preparation.

The finish sits somewhere between matt and satin, giving a softer modern look without too much shine. It’s also highly durable once cured and works brilliantly when sprayed onto larger exterior surfaces.

Bradite One Can Eggshell

Bradite One Can Eggshell is one of those products decorators quietly swear by because it solves so many problems in one tin.

It acts as both a primer and finish coat, adheres to a huge range of surfaces, and dries incredibly quickly, which makes it ideal for projects where speed matters.

It’s particularly popular on more contemporary exterior projects because the eggshell finish gives a softer, more modern look compared to traditional high-gloss metal paints.

Whether you’re updating railings, gutters, cladding, exterior doors, or metal fencing, it gives a really clean finish without looking overly shiny or industrial.

Another big advantage is that it’s low odour and easy to work with, even on larger jobs.

Dulux Trade Weathershield Quick Dry Exterior Satin

If you want a durable exterior paint that’s easy to work with and available in almost any colour, Dulux Trade Weathershield Quick Dry Exterior Satin is a really solid option.

Designed for exterior wood, primed metal, and plastics, it’s ideal for projects where you want multiple outdoor surfaces to tie together in one colour scheme. The satin finish gives a clean modern look without being overly shiny, making it perfect for gates, railings, metal trim, and exterior doors.

Because it’s water based and quick drying, it feels much easier to use than some traditional solvent-based metal paints, while still providing up to 6 years of all-weather protection.

Another huge advantage is that it can be colour matched into thousands of shades, which makes coordinating your exterior metalwork with the rest of your outdoor space much easier.

For the best finish and durability, we’d usually recommend using Dulux Trade Weathershield Quick Dry Exterior Undercoat first on properly prepared surfaces.

Johnstone’s Smooth Metal Paint

Sometimes you just want a paint that’s straightforward, reliable, and easy to use.

That’s exactly where Johnstone’s Smooth Metal Paint fits in.

It’s brush-friendly, gives a smooth traditional finish, and works well on bare metal, previously painted surfaces, and properly prepared rusted areas.

The black finish especially suits classic exterior features like gates, railings, shed hardware, and metal planters where you want a clean timeless look without overcomplicating things.

It’s a great option for smaller projects where you simply want something dependable that gets the job done properly.

Designer Paints That Also Work on Exterior Metal

A lot of people are surprised to learn that some designer paints are actually suitable for exterior metalwork too.

If you’re trying to create a more considered outdoor colour scheme or carry your interior style outside, these are definitely worth looking at.

Farrow & Ball Exterior Eggshell

Farrow & Ball Exterior Eggshell  gives you that classic soft satin look the brand is known for, but with the durability needed for outdoor use.

It works beautifully on exterior metalwork like gates, railings, and garden furniture, especially if you’re after a softer, more design-led finish rather than a traditional gloss look.

The finish stays flexible over time to help resist cracking and peeling, even with changing temperatures, and it’s also protected against algae and fungi.

Being available in the full Farrow & Ball colour range is obviously a huge plus too if you’re trying to coordinate your outdoor space properly.

Another brilliant designer option is Little Greene Intelligent Exterior Eggshell.

It has a lovely soft sheen finish that feels a little more refined than a traditional exterior gloss and works particularly well on railings, doors, and exterior wood and suitably primed metalwork where you want something a bit softer and more contemporary.

It’s weather resistant, low VOC, and designed to hold up beautifully against the elements while still giving that premium decorative finish.

A Few Quick Prep Tips Before You Start

When it comes to painting exterior metal, prep really is the difference between a finish that lasts and one that starts peeling a few months later.

Before painting, make sure the surface is:

  • Clean and dry
  • Free from grease and dirt
  • Free from loose rust or flaking paint
  • Lightly sanded if the surface feels smooth or glossy

A proper cleaner like Krud Kutter Original or Zinsser Universal Degreaser & Cleaner works really well for removing anything that could stop the paint from adhering properly.

If there’s rust or flaking old paint, a wire brush is usually the easiest way to tackle it, especially on textured metal surfaces like gates and railings.

And even if your paint says it can go straight onto metal, a light sand beforehand massively helps with adhesion and durability.

Do You Need a Primer?

Not always, but sometimes it’s worth it.

If you’re working with bare metal, heavily weathered surfaces, difficult glossy coatings, or areas where adhesion could be a concern, then using a primer first can make a huge difference to how long the finish lasts.

One of the primers we recommend most often is Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 because it adheres to almost anything, dries quickly, and works brilliantly on metal surfaces.

It’s particularly useful for exterior metalwork like steel doors, railings, gutters, and previously painted surfaces that need a little extra help before top coating.
