Farrow & Ball Launch Flat Eggshell – Here’s What You Need to Know

Every so often, a new product comes along that makes you think: “Finally, that’s what we’ve been waiting for!.” For me, Flat Eggshell from Farrow & Ball is exactly that.

Now, I’ll admit when I first heard the name, I did a small eye roll... Eggshell is usually associated with a bit of sheen, so “flat eggshell” sounded like a contradiction and a bit of a marketing faux par. But the more I’ve learned, the more it makes perfect sense. This is the durable, low-sheen finish that’s been missing from the Farrow & Ball range.

Why Flat Eggshell?

Previously, if you needed a really tough finish for your woodwork (like in a kitchen or bathroom) or flooring, your only option was Modern Eggshell; fantastic for durability but with a 40% sheen (closer to a satin look in other brands). Don’t get me wrong, this sheen level is incredibly popular with a lot of people, as is Estate Eggshell, but Farrow and Ball lovers are often seeking a flatter, more heritage feel to their finish.

Farrow and Ball have been working on enhancing their range over these past few years, firstly with improvements to their primers and then with the launch for Dead Flat and now Flat Eggshell bridges the final gap I felt they had in their range: super tough, beautifully low-sheen, and versatile enough for almost any project. In fact, it’s replacing Estate Eggshell completely, combining that soft, understated look with a whole lot more strength.

Key Benefits

Low sheen, high style – With a 20% sheen, it subtly highlights skirting boards, staircases, and kitchen cabinetry without looking glossy.

Super tough & stain resistant – Scrubbable, stain-resistant, and scuff-proof. Perfect for busy homes, and even tough enough for floors.

Quick drying & curing – Touch dry in 2 hours, ready for a second coat in 4. Thanks to exceptional hardness and block resistance from day one, you can get back to using your surfaces faster.

Product improvement – Up to 4x harder than Estate Eggshell and 2–3x better block resistance, so it’s a real step up in performance.

Eco-friendly credentials – Minimal VOC, toy safe, A+ rated for indoor air quality, and contains bio-based ingredients.

Beautiful performance – Exceptional hiding power (full opacity in just two coats on a prepared surface) and levels out beautifully for that smooth, even look.

How to Use Flat Eggshell in Your Home

This is where it gets exciting, because Flat Eggshell isn’t just practical, it’s a finish that opens up styling possibilities:

  • Kitchen makeovers – Perfect for cabinet upcycles where stain resistance and wipe-clean toughness matter most.
  • Floors that can take a beating – Painted floorboards look stylish, but need durability. This formula is tough enough from day one.
  • Heritage woodwork – Skirting, bannisters, and doors get just the right amount of definition without the gloss.
  • Bathrooms with character – Ideal for vanity units and bathroom cabinetry where moisture can be an issue.
  • Furniture refreshes – A safe choice for children’s pieces, with toy-safe ingredients and an understated finish.

Colour Inspiration with Flat Eggshell

Because it’s available in all Farrow & Ball colours, the possibilities are endless but here are a few ideas to get you started:

For kitchens: Try dramatic tones like Railings or Hague Blue on cabinets, balanced with lighter walls in Strong White.

For floors: Keep things light and airy with Cornforth White or Wevet, or go bold with Down Pipe or Studio Green for heritage drama.

For woodwork & doors: Pair neutrals like Elephant’s Breath or Skimming Stone with deeper trims in Mole’s Breath for gentle contrast.

For bathroom cabinetry: Fresh shades like Borrowed Light or Pavilion Blue give a timeless, calming look alongside crisp white tiles.

For furniture: Make a statement with bold, characterful tones such as India Yellow or Calke Green – the flat finish keeps the colour modern and rich.

My Take

Honestly, I think Flat Eggshell is a really thoughtful addition to the Farrow & Ball family. It feels like they’ve listened to what customers actually want: a softer, more understated look, but with the strength to handle the knocks of real life.

Yes, the name still makes me smile, but the product itself? A very welcome upgrade. Have a look at the Flat Eggshell finish here at DCO and be the first to give it a try! Or if you’re still not sure about the Farrow & Ball colours you like, pick up a colour chart here.
