4 Steps to Achieving a Minimalist Aesthetic

4 Steps to Achieving a Minimalist Aesthetic

Minimalism calls for clean lines, neutral tones and lots of clutter free space to inspire you towards a life of less stuff and more joy. But this is certainly easier said than done! Even if you manage to tackle the first hurdle; decluttering, it can be difficult to get that minimalist feel without leaving your home feeling cold, sparse and unlived-in. With that in mind I thought I'd pull together some of my favourite spaces that manage to get the perfect balance between simplistic and homely.

Hopefully now you’re fully inspired. Let's talk about some key steps to help you achieve your minimalist aesthetic!

Functionality

Consider how the space will be used. Many of our homes are multifunctional to include home spaces or home gyms for example. Knowing how the room needs to be used will give you a great starting point.

For example:  If there are items in the room that aren’t necessarily functional for that space, something as simple as gathering them into a decorative basket will make a huge difference with minimal effort.

Storage

Minimalist design is based around the method of having no clutter however our homes need to be lived in! There’s no need to have a huge clearout or stress yourself with the pressure of feeling like you have to ‘stage’ your home every day!

For example: if your hallway is constantly filled with shoes, get a console or unit to pop them into. You don’t need to spend a fortune! Why don’t you try an ikea hack, or breathe some love back into an old piece from Facebook marketplace with some furniture paint to fit your design!

Colour Scheme

Clutter isn’t just physical items. A colour palette with lots of unconnected colours creates visual clutter. Switching to a more monochromatic colour scheme that flows will make an immediate impact on your home. Don’t worry, this doesn’t mean you have to paint everything black and white! Monochromatic schemes come from varying depths of tone of the same shade! We’ve covered it in detail in our Magic Of Monochrome blog here!

Textures

One worry that a lot of people have when considering trying minimalist design is that the space will look sterile or boring. This is not the case! The key to avoiding this is mixing different textures to add movement and visual interest. Pairing this with clean walls and empty corners will create gorgeous flow throughout your home.
